Welcome to another edition of the Last Week or so In Review. A compilation featuring highlights of stories and articles from our various sources, contributors and readers.
1/ Ukraine, Russia and The Crimea
Otherwise soon to be known as “the shits on fire show”. In our previous Week or so In Review I had mentioned that the Sochi Olympics had the feeling of the Olympics of Berlin in 1936(that was on Feb 12th!) . As our friend Jim said, its like the post 1936 Olympics in fast forward. Also a thank you to Dave M on our Facebook group for giving us timely info as this situation developed!
So a quick brief- Russian troops “secured” the airport and other spots in the Crimean area of Ukraine just after announcing (about 48 hrs prior)that they were conducting readiness military exercises. Now it’s become Russian troops defending a Russian speaking majority there due to turmoil and Ukraine passing anti-Russian speaking language legislation. The United States had some strong language about it but so far that appears to be about it. One report suggested that the U.S. felt that Germany needs to take the lead on this one. Yeah really, I guess nobody considered how anyone else would feel about German troops in the Ukraine again! In the world of bad ideas this has to be one of the tops. There is also calls for Poland to take a larger role.
So the Russian parliament has given the green light for troops to deploy into the Ukraine itself, Ukraine has went on full alert mobilizing its military and reservists and the U.S. 7th Fleet is on its way to the area. Let’s just hope this doesn’t become the new flashpoint for wider war.
2/ Police Brutality
We should expect that those various police phrases such as “To Protect and Serve” actually have meaning and that our police should have public safety and rule of law in mind. However with increasing militarization of police forces and a change in how police are trained (us vs them mentality) increasing incidents of police brutality are bound to happen. Since 9-11 everyone is now a suspected terrorists and many police have become nothing better than goons. Recently a deaf man was tasared by police in California while he was trying to communicate using sign language! The killing of a army veteran by police in Canada is especially galling considering he was walking away from them and then got shot in the back!
3/ Mysterious rash of banker deaths
Before this one goes off the radar I feel we need to keep an eye on it. With other events in Crimea going on other stories, especially ones that were shadowy to begin with, tend to fall off the map.
Of late there has been a lot of bankers showing up as suicides especially with JP Morgan. It’s hard to feel anything for these bankers but at the end of the day they are still human beings.
George Soro’s has apparently bet against the economy. Maybe these dead bankers knew something they shouldn’t have? Or maybe something they could not face?
