For those who enjoyed the original this is for you. Anyone else who doesn’t enjoy fun films and is looking for artsy-fartsy deep meaning films just click on a different page now.. this isn’t for you.
Well we’ve been waiting awhile for this one since 2010 in our last article about this film. Finally got to see it after it was finally released.
Like allot of movies it seems we like the critics hated it. Again frick them, I thought this movie was great! Blood, guts, action, betrayal, loyalty, friendship through mutual suffering. Everything you need really.
Plenty of homage to the original film it still takes it’s own direction and stands well on it’s own and doesn’t feel the need to be “just a remake”. Myself I liked it even better than the original although Mr.K disagrees. Although he loved it too he still holds that the original is still the better film. Vive le difference. It would have been better if they had kept the invaders as Chi Com forces instead of caving into political expediency….
Story summed up in a few sentences or less:
North Korean commies invade a town in WA U.S.A.
Local kids along with a Marine on leave head for the hills and start a resistance group. Plenty of action, some good tactics and some hard choices. Hopes raised, dreams dashed and hard realities set in. End plot summary.
The film was done well and in the same vein as the original. For the nay-sayers who crapped on it calling it Americana propaganda… go fuck yourselves. It’s an action film meant to be taken that way, not a political statement. I only noticed a few gaffs on the weapons handling (ie a scene where the SAW gunner had about a few dozen rounds left but seems to be able to fire about a 1/4 box) but otherwise everything was in the realm of possibility.
As for potential “could that really happen”, spoiler alert- the North Koreans had help. As well some sneaky EMP weapons are used that negate the U.S.’s high tech advantage. Which let’s face it would happen (ie using EMP weapons) if any power were really to seriously consider an invasion of U.S. soil. Also we know that commies are sick and evil bastards who only deserve our contempt!
If anyone watches these kinds of movies for Academy Award winning performances than you’ve got bigger issues than we can help with (yeah you wanna be critics at Rotten Tomatoes). So again to the critics knocking these kinds of films and horror films for the acting, get a life. Its a fun escapist movie and should be taken that way. One critique I read and agree with is that the story would have been better served as a T.V. movie series instead of being crammed into and hour and a half.
I give it a thumbs up along with Mr.K and Kount Kreepy, go see it or rent it. “WOLVERINES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
