In 1932 there was a plot to overthrown then American President FDR. Fortunately the whistle was blown by Smedley Darlington Butler ( ret USMC general and 2 time Medal of Honor man). The quick and dirty: big business and bankers didnt like FDR’s New Deal. These same fat cats were also funding the fascists and the Nazi’s ( and the USSR!) and wanted to see a fascist state in the United States. They thought that Smedley who was looked up to by many veterans groups would lead the coup while “they” pulled the strings. Smedley played along until he learned enough about who was who and then testified to Congress about his findings.This was known as the McCormack-Dickstein Committee( also the beginning of the The permanent standing House Committee on Un-American Activities)
It got brushed under the rug and what did get out was basically relegated to the back page news ( some of the media moguls were sympathetic to the big boys club ie Wall Street, Rockefellers, etc- of note Prescott Bush ( W’s grand dad was one of the plotters!). Now here’s the rub, if that could happen back when just imagine what’s been going on since say the JFK assassination! Or post 9-11? Where’s someone who actually takes the oaths to protect and defend the Constitution and willing to step forward? Democracy is always under attack from elites wanting to ensure their special status and will do anything they can to step on the common man to keep their lofty positions.Even though names were named nobody ever got indicted or arrested. You might have heard the phrase “too big to fail” well these people were “too big to get arrested”. Not unlike the criminals of Wall Street today who technically by the letter and spirit of the law are guilty as hell but no one’s been arrested for the Libor Banking scandal yet either.

* Irenee Du Pont – Right-wing chemical industrialist and founder of the American Liberty League, the organization assigned to execute the plot.
* Grayson Murphy – Director of Goodyear, Bethlehem Steel and a group of J.P. Morgan banks.
* William Doyle – Former state commander of the American Legion and a central plotter of the coup.
* John Davis – Former Democratic presidential candidate and a senior attorney for J.P. Morgan.
* Al Smith – Roosevelt’s bitter political foe from New York. Smith was a former governor of New York and a codirector of the American Liberty League.
* John J. Raskob – A high-ranking Du Pont officer and a former chairman of the Democratic Party. In later decades, Raskob would become a “Knight of Malta,” a Roman Catholic Religious Order with a high percentage of CIA spies, including CIA Directors William Casey, William Colby and John McCone.
* Robert Clark – One of Wall Street’s richest bankers and stockbrokers.
* Gerald MacGuire – Bond salesman for Clark, and a former commander of the Connecticut American Legion. MacGuire was the key recruiter to General Butler.
* Prescott Bush — Wall Street executive, US senator

August 21, 1931, Butler spoke to an American Legion convention in New Britain CT. Looking back, he reflected on his career. His remarks stunned the audience. Few papers dared report even part of the speech:
“I spent 33 years…being a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer for capitalism….
“I helped purify Nicaragua for the international banking house of Brown Brothers in 1909-1912. I helped make Mexico and especially Tampico safe for American oil interests in 1916. I brought light to the Dominican Republic for American sugar interests in 1916. I helped make Haiti and Cuba a decent place for the National City [Bank] boys to collect revenue in. I helped in the rape of half a dozen Central American republics for the benefit of Wall Street….
“In China in 1927 I helped see to it that Standard Oil went its way unmolested….I had…a swell racket. I was rewarded with honors, medals, promotions….I might have given Al Capone a few hints. The best he could do was to operate a racket in three cities. The Marines operated on three continents…”
