The Road to the Book of Eli

Mr.K is going to save some time today and give a write up on both The Road (Showing at your local art house cinema) and The Book of Eli (showing at your local manyplex). This is not as difficult as you may think as they borrow heavily from each other.

The movies are set in a post apocalypse world where a man heads to the coast while walking down a road with a child or child like colleague. Neither movie gets into great detail on what has happened to cause the collapse of society but its cold, food and or water are in short supply and cannibals are quite common.

My biggest problem with the movies is neither child is able to cope in the world that they have grown up in, full of cannibals and marauders. Unless you grew up in the fifties playing with loaded rifles and bags of rusty nails, you where most likely taught some basic street safety beyond watch out for Communists. You would expect that the parents would pass on the knowledge that was taught to them.

Lets try some basic parenting. It works now as after the great collapse.

Look both ways before crossing the street……………because there may be someone waiting to eat you.

Don’t play in the middle of the street…………………..because there may be a marauding gang who want to eat you.

Don’t let the bad man touch you………………………..because he may want to chop you up and eat you.

Don’t talk to strangers……………………………………because they will want to eat you.

When I tell you to pull the trigger on someone you do it… because they are going to eat you.

How hard is that?

Both movies play on the fact that after a number of years bullets will be in short supply. Now the DVDs may correct me on this but I swear I heard the line “I doubt that there are any bullets in that gun” in both movies.

The main difference between the two is that half way into the The Road still made sense and was believable while the Book of Eli just started to fall apart and got worse.

.

The EVS rating guide

The Road……………….Go and see, great movie and you are supporting your local mom and pop theatre.

Book of Eli………………Wait till DVD, unless you are religious then see it on the cheap night.

  1. Well I finally got around to watching both of these movies. Indeed any Fallout series fans will enjoy either of these movies. I liked both myself. Eli was just missing some power armor from the Brotherhood of Steel and maybe a Super Mutant or two then it would have been awesome! If you liked either of these movies also be sure to see ” A boy and his dog” another classic. -EvS
