Chances are when the “shit hits the fan” those garden gnomes aren’t coming to the rescue. So what can you do if the zombies are coming?

Before we get into this realize that in many States, Provinces, Municipalities, etc it is ILLEGAL to fortify your home or set out booby traps! The following is for

ACADEMIC RESEARCH PURPOSES ONLY!!!!!!!!

The reasons are pretty simple, you don’t need claymore mines out there and have the cable guy blow his legs off checking your connection or you dialed emergency services and the paramedics can’t make it past the triple bolted door and barb wire. Or if you have a house fire and emergency response gets hurt trying to get you help. Worse yet,you or a loved one wakes up in the middle of the night, forget about the booby traps and get hurt! Traps and weapons work both ways and don’t care who gets hurt. REMEMBER THAT.

Now having said that, lets take a look at a HYPOTHETICAL

scenario and what one might do if they were in such a scenario. These hypothetical plans can range from the very simple to an outright war-fronting. Another thing, always have an escape plan. If the hoard is too much they might get in eventually (be they undead or evil communists), so have an escape tunnel, zip line or whatever gets you the hell out of there. No escape plan turns your home into the Alamo, and most of us know what happened there.(at left “Pavlov’s House”)

During WW2 on the Eastern Front, there was a Russian guy named Pavlov and his understrength platoon held out against the Germans at Stalingrad for about a month in 1942. So about 20 some odd guys held onto a 4 story apartment block against the Wehrmacht! No small feat!
Check out DEMCAD on YouTube who has a slew of great videos on SHTF scenarios and instructional videos with great information.
Some simple stuff. Barricading the windows and doors:

Using plywood outside (and inside) on windows for flying debris and curious zombies is a good thing.
But what if the commies have tear gas to get you to come out? Simple chicken wire over windows and openings will help bounce back tear gas grenades, Molotov’s,rocks, etc. Also, having big buckets of water 5 Gallons or so, (and thick leather gloves or welders mitts ) by each window is good as well. If a gas grenade or smoke grenade does get through, pick it up (wearing mitts, gloves, etc) and drop it into water bucket, smoke or gas will dissipate harmlessly into the water/Sodium or Calcium Hypochlorite (ie pool bleach) mix you will have in those buckets (2/3rds water)- the bleach will “neutralize” CS gas. Another thing make sure the buckets are metal, plastic will melt. But in a pinch better than nothing.

Another thing, having exhaust vents/air ducts sealed room by room may be a consideration as well, situation depending. Also there are plenty of after market plastic films that fit on windows to make them shatter resistant. Maybe even having “grenade sumps”, holes you kick grenades into that dump outside could be a good idea.

Doors– hammering some wedges, butter knives, screw drivers between the door and the frame work well, or go so far the time old bar over the door like in the above video works great. The old chair under the door knob works for a little bit but isn’t really effective. Debris such as furniture, cabinets, or any other heavy stuff in the house works well too. Some more on windows and doors here.

Now before we get to the inside of the house, lets revisit the outside of the house.

Clear fields of fire- can you see across the street and anything that may be a threat before it becomes one? Any debris, trees, cars, etc that can hide a threat?
Wire obstacles- barb wire is only meant to slow down an enemy or channel them into a kill zone
Removing aids to invaders -ie drains or pipes that may allow them to scale to the roof, remember that clear fields of fire? Ladders, big things they could use to throw on the wire or use as battering rams?
Knowing blind spots -where someone or something can move around but you can see them,or it,etc. Maybe setting up something like traps or alarms in those areas, better yet get rid of them or change something around in the house so it isn’t a blind spot.

Inside the home:

Nail shut doors and cut holes on the bottom of the doors to force people to have to crawl low though doors, making it harder for others to get through and leaving zombies vulnerable to head shots. This way zombies can only get in one at a time! If you have a second floor, take out the stairs (or trap them). Put hole through the second story floor and first floor ceiling, use ladders or ropes that can be easily taken away to not allow the zombies entrance.

Also remember that the doors are obstructed, make some holes through the walls room to room. Its all about funneling the traffic through the building into “kill zones”, ie where the zombie (or others) get funneled into an area only the defenders know and get dispatched. Also have lots of sandbags running along the walls that face outside, this gives extra protection. If there is lots of drywall, wet it down, no sense breathing that in if dusts starts getting knocked around. Have lots of fire extinguishers as one never knows.

If you can’t knock out the stairs tie down lots of barbed wire in the stair well and have it trapped. Turn off the gas!!!! Last thing you need is for the house to burn down or blow up!Needless to say you should also be stocked up with medical supplies, weapons and ammo, and WATER. You can go hungry for a few weeks but only a day or two without water. Keep in mind that frame houses (ie not brick) offer almost no protection against projectiles. Dressers filled with sand or rocks and pushed up against an area can offer protection.

There are lots of military manuals online that shows things like UO (Urban Operations),MOUT (Military Operations on Urban Terrain) or FIBUA (Fighting In Built Up Areas) and should give anyone an idea of how to defend their homes from zombie, commie hoards or breakdown of society scenarios. And don’t forget about the escape plan, tunnels or zip lines, big smoke cover and run, whatever the terrain and situation require.

Other considerations (or what I call dreaming in color):
Have security cameras on a battery backup to cover those aforementioned blind spots would be fantastic. A “screening room” or security buffer outside of front door, like a security porch would also be great. A tunnel going to the neighbors house or out to the sewer. Flood lights, infrared, etc

Picture at left of having a screening area before anyone actually gets to your front door. Or set up an L shaped barricade made of concrete before the front door, to help keep the wind out (not battering rams, lol) when your smoking outside, as one shouldn’t smoke in their home.

There’s plenty of resources out there in libraries, hardware stores, construction contractors looking for work, what have you that can help you zombie proof your home or in case you are worried about a worst case scenario or societal collapse.

Thanks for tuning in.
