Well in the world of DIY (do it yourself for you noobs out there) it was bound to start reaching into the area of firearms. thanks to Danny B one of our fans for inspiring this article. The EvS Fb group has threatened to turn into a firearms related discussion group lately so we might as well throw this article out there, lmao.

DISCLAIMER- we are not suggesting you do any of these things. FOR ACADEMIC PURPOSES ONLY! and yes this is just to cover our asses from dumb asses who might do or say something stupid in a litigates country and blame it on us.

Alright now with that out of the way…… in case of zombie uprising or other cataclysmic events you might want to know a few of these things. Most of us can’t afford the gucci guns out there with laser whatever and carbon fibre furniture etc. So what’s someone on a budget to do when it comes to defense? Some good ole DIY know how, that’s how!

For shits and giggles next time your pal’in around with the gun nuts ask this question. Why is a 12 gauge a 12 Gauge? Back in the day, a lead sphere that weighted 1/12th of a pound would fit down the barrel of a shotgun thus 12 gauge. Neato, huh! same goes for 20 or 8, etc. (Chuckhawkes has lots of good no b.s. info for everyone on everything on shotguns)

Now back to the self sufficient know how. In reality there is only 3 types of firearms you really need ( actually 6 cuz you should have doubles of everyone you have in case one breaks- ie one equals it might work it might not. 2 equals one that works for sure).

1/ A SHOTGUN – preferably a 12 gauge. The shotgun is the most versatile firearm in the planet, it can be used ( with switching ammo and or barrels) for shooting for fun or survival and cheaply. From bird shot to slugs ( or cut shells -more on that later).  Also ammo is easy to manufacture or obtain and widely available.

2/ a .22 rifle or pistol. Good for plinking (and cost effective) or small game. Again commonly available. Of note .22 cal overall has actually proven to have a higher fatality rating than the overly touted 9mm. Sorry gangsta’s.

3/ any given center fire rifle. look at things like military surplus or any rifle that everyone and their dog has, for instance mini-14’s, bolt action anything .270, .223,.30-30, 5.56×45, .308, any of the russian 7.62x39mm. You get the gist. Do some research and remember commonly available is key.

Some easy but important information as follows- the lost art of “cut shells” NOTE- use only in a break open shotgun, no pumps or otherwise!  This was used as a slug before slugs were even invented so could use as a poor man’s slug even using bird shot( well before commonly available the Brennekke? slug was made about 1900). Remember that shotgun versatility we mentioned earlier.

Some cheap sound suppressors ( silencer is a misnomer ) using a simple adapter and oil filter can

a DIY (and works better than the pop bottle ones) for .22 can be adapted for larger cals.

just a cursory search revealed a DYI submg in 9mm ( remember those .22s statistically speaking are still deadlier!)

The LA County Sheriff’s Department has a pretty extensive publication/presentation on improvised/disguised weapons ( and just to mention some of them illegal as all hell- just a warning)

knowing how to make and reload your own ammo is also an underestimated skill and can be learned easily. There is no shortage of resources out there!

  1. Thanks a lot EVS! I really learned quite a bit. The “cut-shot” blew my mind. Until now, I hadn’t thought I’d get a shotgun… but now my mind has changed.

Any opinions on bolt action .308 rifles? I’d like to get a long scope and cheap but functional .308 and go for distance. I looked at the ammo availability and price for rifles in that neighbourhood, and the .308 has some rounds that cost about a $0.25 shot. What would be a good rifle in that caliber, for a poor boy like me?

  2. well for .308 is good for a variety of mid to bigger game. a bit expensive for a plinking rifle but not to pricey for getting in your practice at the range. similar to .308 are a wide variety of former East Bloc arms that are widely available, reliable and cheaper on ammo. an SKS rifle using 7.62x39mm which although different is similar in characteristics of the .308 but much cheaper. also the is a wide variety of kits and accessories for the SKS that are affordable for the everyday working stiff. ammo when bought in bulk is ALLOT cheaper too!
