EvSHorrorWelcome morbid reader to The Last Week (or so ) in Horror, a compilation of reviews, views and other data in connection with Kount Kreepy and I’s obsession with the horror film genre.

Here are some of the films I have watched in the last little while with a trailer and quick review to accompany them. As well I will start to feature “up and coming films” and horror fiction (focusing on indy films and works).

Id like to start with some of the movies Ive been watching of late:

1/ Deliver Us from Evil

I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from this film especially for a mainstream film. A tough NYPD cop teams up with a Catholic exorcist (with a sketchy past) taking on an ancient evil and its followers. Despite it’s claim to be based off of a true story it’s Hollywood all the way and the actual events are fictionalized and only the names remain the same. Be sure to check out the real story though as its pretty whacked out. Getting back to the movie though there are some really great possession scenes and the exorcism in a police station really does hit some new techniques effects wise. The story itself was pretty good and just a bit out of the mold to be worth watching but not so far outside of it that the veteran horror buffs wont recognize certain time tested horror formulas. Some decent acting outside of Olivia Munn from Attack of the Show fame, she makes a good effort though and in time…… well did I mention she’s good looking?

2/ Where the Devil hides

Well it sure is good for a rental night. Don’t expect block buster on this one but it is still a fun movie if predictable. Small Mennonite community plagued by over bearing elders and their belief in a prophesy. Mix in some mysterious murders, boy meets girl and the over-arching what if the asshole is right? The budget got blown on hiring Colm Meaney Im sure but it still plays out like the little indy that could. Plus having Colm in a movie kind of gives that acting cred that Lawrence Fishburn  brings to any movie he acts in. Regardless of the budget if your going to play with these guys your going to work dammit!

3/ Silent Retreat

You ever had one of those dreams where you know your stuck somewhere and should get the fuck out but you cant? Just due to that dream logic that your in a snow globe of terror? LOL, no? Ok Camp Crystal Lake meets Jonestown massacre and Jimmy has a PhD in psychiatry! This film has a silent retreat as its background but the camp director/councilor/psychologist seems all too intelligent- praying mantis intelligent and domineering. Rarely do we get to see a horror film from a female perspective (Director Tricia Lee )or one directed by a woman, this has both. Silent Retreat was also the winner of the Toronto After Dark film fest for best Canadian Film in 2013. Silent Retreat is also our independent film of the week and is sure the give you the creeps!! Thanks to their promoters at Twitter for turning us onto this film.

Thanks for tuning in. More horror reviews to follow! -EvS
